Flanders Expo is the place to be in Ghent for trade fairs, congresses, expos, and corporate events. With its versatile halls and modern facilities, it attracts the most visitors in Ghent annually (second only to the Gravensteen castle). Together with Ikea, Flanders Expo ensures that The Loop is the city’s busiest epicenter. Thanks to smart investments in comfort, accessibility, and flexibility, organizers can effortlessly let any type of event shine here.
The Sint-Denijs-Westrem airfield closes permanently to make way for Flanders Expo. Following successful editions of Flanders Technology, NV Flanders Expo is founded, and construction begins on 7 exhibition halls, which are officially opened during the third edition of the fair. Ghent thus becomes a fully-fledged trade fair and event city.
Despite a heavy initial investment and debt burden, Flanders Expo grows into a profitable and professionally developed exhibition complex. Hall 8 is realized, reinforcing the multi-purpose character of the site with space for sports, music, and public events. Major stars such as Tina Turner, AC/DC, and Bruce Springsteen make their appearance there.
Flanders Expo experiences an international breakthrough as an event arena with iconic events such as I Love Techno, for years one of the largest indoor dance events in Europe.
With the realization of The Loop, the Flanders Expo site evolves into a fully-fledged urban district with housing, green zones, shops, offices, and businesses. From 2020, The Loop undergoes a transformation into a future-oriented event campus: investment in modern meeting facilities, sustainability, mobility, and strong integration within urban development.
Setting for the Davis Cup final between Belgium and Great Britain, a highlight in the site’s sporting history.
